Firmware is the software that runs on your router. Updates deliver security patches, bug fixes, performance improvements, and occasionally new features.

Security patches close vulnerabilities that hackers could use to access your network.
Performance updates can improve WiFi speeds, range, and connection stability.
Bug fixes resolve known issues like random disconnections or slow admin panel response.
Skipping updates leaves your router exposed to known exploits.

Checking for Updates

Most modern routers make it easy to check for and install firmware updates through their admin panel or companion app.

Log in to your router's admin panel and look for a Firmware, System, or Update section.
Many routers have a "Check for Updates" button that scans for the latest version automatically.
If your router has a companion mobile app, firmware updates may be available there as well.
Check for updates at least once a month, or whenever you notice performance issues.

Update Best Practices

Applying a firmware update is usually quick, but there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure a smooth process.

Never power off or unplug your router during a firmware update — this can permanently damage the device.
Schedule updates during low-usage hours since the router will restart and briefly disconnect all devices.
If your router supports automatic updates, enable them so you never miss a critical patch.
After updating, verify your WiFi settings are intact — occasionally an update may reset custom configurations.
Keep a note of your current firmware version so you can confirm the update was applied.
