Changing Your WiFi Password

A step-by-step guide to updating your WiFi password and reconnecting your devices.

When to Change Your Password

Regularly updating your WiFi password is a simple but effective security habit. There are also specific situations where an immediate change is warranted.

Change your password every 3–6 months as a general best practice.
Change it immediately if you've shared it with someone you no longer want on your network.
Change it if you notice unknown devices connected to your network.
Change it after any security incident or if your router was reset to factory defaults.

How to Change Your Password

You can update your WiFi password through your router's admin panel. The process is straightforward and takes just a few minutes.

Open a browser and navigate to your router's admin address (commonly 192.168.1.1).
Log in with your admin credentials (found on the label on the bottom of your router if you haven't changed them).
Navigate to the Wireless or WiFi settings section.
Enter your new password in the WiFi Password or Pre-Shared Key field.
Save your changes — the router may restart briefly.

After Changing Your Password

Once your password is updated, every previously connected device will need to reconnect using the new password.

Reconnect your most important devices first — phones, laptops, and work computers.
Don't forget IoT devices like smart speakers, thermostats, cameras, and smart plugs.
On most devices, go to WiFi settings, forget the old network, then reconnect with the new password.
Write down the new password and store it in a safe place, or use a password manager.
