Improving Your WiFi Signal

Practical tips for getting the strongest, most reliable WiFi coverage throughout your space.

Optimal Router Placement

Where you place your router has the single biggest impact on signal quality. A few simple adjustments can dramatically improve coverage.

Place your router in a central location, elevated off the floor (on a shelf or mounted on a wall).
Keep it away from thick walls, metal objects, and large appliances — these block and absorb signal.
Avoid placing the router inside cabinets, closets, or behind furniture.
If you have a multi-story home, place the router on the floor where you use WiFi most.

Other electronic devices and neighboring WiFi networks can interfere with your signal. Minimizing interference leads to a more stable connection.

Keep the router away from microwaves, baby monitors, cordless phones, and Bluetooth speakers.
Switch to a less congested WiFi channel — most routers can scan for the best channel automatically.
Use the 5 GHz band in areas with heavy 2.4 GHz congestion (apartment buildings, dense neighborhoods).
Avoid running long cables alongside your router or across its antennas.

A mesh WiFi system provides seamless whole-home coverage with a single network name.
Wired access points (connected via Ethernet) offer the best performance for coverage extension.
WiFi extenders are a budget option but can reduce speeds — place them halfway between your router and the dead zone.
Outdoor spaces may require a weatherproof access point or outdoor router for reliable coverage.
